Scott's Run Settlement House

Established 1922, Osage, WV

Our beginning...

In 1922, Osage, WV was a small mining community with poverty, sub-standard health and poor education.  The Women's Home Missionary Society of Morgantown saw the need and started the Scott's Run Settlement House Program to provide spiritual education, health services, and recreation.  They gave Osage residents a place to turn to in 1922, and we remain committed to that mission today!

Our growth...

Edna Leona, Founding Director, 1922-1923

Rev. Violet L. Petso, Director, 1964-1978

1990s-2020s

Due to the booming coal industry in Scott's Run, immigrants found themselves relocating to the area throughout the '20s and '30s.  The members of the Women's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Church in Morgantown began programs to help house and feed the growing immigrant population.  English language programs as well as preparatory programs to become naturalized citizens were offered. These programs evolved into cooking classes, reading classes and Sunday school lessons.  In the 1950s, the Settlement House became very active in the civic affairs of the community of Osage.

In the 1960s and 1970s, work teams began to come to the area in the summers, university students volunteered, a day care was started and senior citizen activities begun.  During the 1980s, the Settlement House housed Meals on Wheels, a program started by young and single mothers, and the food pantry was established. In the 1980s, Scott's Run Settlement House applied for 501(c)3 status to look for ways to further fund projects and missions.

In the past 30 years, the Settlement House has continued to evolve with new projects as the need arises throughout the community.  The service area has expanded to the boarders of Monongalia county and then beyond to neighboring counties.  We take pride in aiding individuals of all ages, backgrounds, nationalities, beliefs and capabilities.  After 100 years, the original mission of our founders remains: to help our neighbors in need.

Shay Petitto, Director, 2015-2022
